Newnham Park, Plymouth provides rugged challenge for Inter Service MTB XC Championships as part of Carillion sponsored UKAF Cycling Championships 2017
Newnham Park Plymouth is the venue for the 2017 Royal Navy Royal Marine (RNRM) Mountain Bike Cross Country (MTB XC) Championships on Wednesday 5th July starting at 1300. The race ‘doubles up’ as the Inter Service MTB XC Championships. The event is open to all serving members of the Armed Forces and civilian guests. The competition is open to selected MTB XC teams from the Army, RAF and RN/RM.
This single race 80-minute event incorporates three separate categories: Naval Service (NS), Inter Service (IS) and grassroots competitors. The aim is to crown the best individual male and female NS riders and the best individual male and female IS riders as well as recognising the overall Armed Services winning team of eight riders. Each IS team has to have a minimum of one female rider. The event also aims to introduce members of the Royal Navy to XC racing via the Royal Navy Royal Marines (RN&RMCA) MTB XC grassroots novice event.
Jim Bowden, Business Development Director, Carillion Government & Defence said:
“It is inspiring to see the skill and determination in the teams and individuals taking part in these challenging MTB XC Championships in Plymouth’s Newnham Park. Carillion is committed to supporting the development of cycling as a competitive Inter Service sport through our sponsorship of UK Armed Forces Cycling. Plymouth is home to the Royal Navy and it is great the Championships are being held in the local community. Cycling is growing in popularity throughout the UK as well as being a highly competitive military sport. I hope that our support will help inspire future world class cyclists.”
Colonel Stuart Williams, Chairman of UKAF Cycling said:
“We are grateful to Carillion for taking up our invitation to sponsor this exciting new venture to support us in building our cycling excellence to match the other key sports that serving members of the Armed Forces engage in. We believe that working with Carillion as a trusted commercial partner will help us raise the public and community profile of a new Armed Forces sport regulated by the Army Sports Control Board (ASCB). Our long term ambition is to establish a UK Tri Service team that will take part in international competition. We look forward to Carillion being with us on this exciting journey.”
Gary Streeter, MP for South West Devon said:
“I strongly support the Inter Service cycling event taking part in my constituency this week. I wish every competitor well and will be with them in spirit as they whistle through the delights of Devon.”
This MTB XC event is sponsored by Carillion as part of our sole sponsorship of the United Kingdom Armed Forces (UKAF) Cycling Championships over the next three years. The 2017 Championships are hosted by the Royal Navy Royal Marines Cycling Association (RN&RMCA). Four different disciplines over the year challenge participants who are all serving members of the Armed Forces: Road Race (RR), Time Trials (TT), Mountain Bike Cross Country (MTB XC) and Mountain Bike Downhill (MTB DH).
